I would like to read at least about when women got the vote in Romania and more about queens and female pioneers, not just the odd name mentioned without as much as a sentence added about them. Reasonable information, easy read - seems more objective than what history school books tell you. As an Englishman reading this it was a perfect introduction to eastern european history.

Djuvara describes nice all the happenings in the Romanian history. While reading the book, I had constantly the impression that the opvestita style had something weird, something not fitting with a book.
Furthermore, due to the fact that the language is of spoken word, many of the statements and opinions expressed in this book do not have the authority that a history book should inspire to the reader. The liberal use of illustrations also help to break the text up and add colour which make it a very accessible introduction to the history of the Romanian people.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading his story of Romanians and he opened up my viewpoint past that of a "westerner" to understand how the Europe we see today came to be formed.

The development of the boyar class and the election of voivodes is unique to this region, and it is interesting to contemplate the long term implications of this system of governance.
Djuvara probably gives a clearer account povfstita anyone else but the nature of the voivodes and boyars means that the narrative is not as easy to tell as other lands where the rule of hereditary kings makes a stronger storyline. It was definitely enjoyable but it's not the best learning material if you ask me.

Like many historians of Romania he relies of philology quite a bit to unravel the early history of the people which, given the paucity of written evidence is fair enough and but always leaves me not entirely convinced.
